The Delaware River was originally called the Grasshopper River; the falls on the river were called Grasshopper Falls; and the town on the river was called Grasshopper Falls. After the grasshopper plagues of the 1870's that affected much of Kansas no one want to move to live near any place that had grasshopper in its name. So, the residents changed the name of the town to Valley Falls, the state legislature changed the name of the river to the Delaware River, and nobody spoke of the falls at Grasshopper Falls.
The Delaware River now feeds Perry Lake and effluent from the dam at Perry Lake allows water from the Delaware to continue on down to the Kansas River. |
